Behind The Bureau

Behind The Bureau

Hello, I'm Michelle, the furniture artist and creative mind behind The Furniture Bureau. For the past 10 years, I've been transforming vintage furniture, combining my love of beautiful craftsmanship with creativity and a passion for giving much-loved pieces a new lease of life.

I believe beautiful furniture deserves to be cherished, not discarded simply because it no longer suits our homes. Vintage pieces often possess a quality of craftsmanship and character that's difficult to find in modern furniture, and I love uncovering their hidden potential.

Through thoughtful design, colour and carefully chosen finishing touches, I transform furniture into something truly personal, preserving its history while creating a piece that feels perfectly at home in today's interiors.

A Love For Vintage Bureaus

I've always had a particular soft spot for vintage writing bureaus. With their hidden compartments, beautifully crafted interiors and wonderful little details, they're full of character and surprises.

I particularly enjoy preserving their original features while introducing fresh colours, beautiful wallpapers and carefully chosen finishing touches to create something as individual as you.

Whether it's a quiet corner for writing letters or a beautiful space to work from home, I love seeing these timeless pieces take on a new purpose while retaining their original charm.

Based in Stotfold, on the Hertfordshire/Bedfordshire border, I work with clients locally and across England, transforming their own vintage furniture into bespoke pieces filled with character and individuality.

Creativity runs through everything I do. Alongside bespoke furniture commissions, I create one-of-a-kind and limited-edition handmade homewares, including my totally unique tableware, handcrafted using beautiful designer wallpapers. I also offer a carefully curated selection of creative supplies, including GILD Metallic Paints and Artist's Brushes, which I personally use and trust in my own work.

Sharing creativity is equally important to me. Through my 1-to-1 Furniture Painting Workshops, Metal Embossing Craft Classes and seasonal favourites such as Baubles & Bubbles Christmas Parties, I help others discover the confidence and satisfaction that comes from learning new skills and creating something beautiful with their own hands.

At the heart of The Furniture Bureau is a belief that beautiful things deserve to last. Whether preserving a much-loved piece of vintage furniture, creating something special for the home or helping others discover their own creativity, my work is guided by the same philosophy: beautiful craftsmanship deserves to be celebrated, thoughtfully reimagined and enjoyed for years to come.
